In 2019, a 10x10 meter art group visited the opening of contemporary art exhibitions in Riga and Tallinn. The group recorded, compiled and transcribed the opening speeches of the exhibition curators.
The performance “We did it!” consists of a dozen speeches by art curators performed by young Estonian artists from 10x10 meters.
This is parody of the curators who thank themselves for their huge and heavy work. The struggle they have gone through to make that exhibition possible. The endless honors, flowers and ovations to each other, they “only” forgetting participating artists who fulfilled their brilliant ideas. Performance is related to the theme of power-mechanism within the art world. The curators, who have forgotten the artists or have became more of creators themselves. They also can direct art trends and the emergence or invisibility of artists according to their personal taste preferences.
The same artists who do similar artworks are circulating at art festivals around the world. The result is a quite safe, one-sided artistic world without risky, dangerous, critical works. System and rules in contemporary art world are similar to the capitalist market economy, where the work of artists is marketed and sold like any other product in the supermarket.
